Write a salutation or greeting for each email. Write a salutation, a polite expression of greeting or goodwill, for each new email.
HELPFUL HINT:
For external email correspondence the level of formality or informality used will depend on the relationship you have with the addressee.
If you normally address a person as Mr./Mrs./Ms./Sir then this is how you should initially address them in an email.
Use “Dear Mr. Graham” or “Dear Ms. Graham”.
Avoid using only “Mr. Graham” without the “Dear” as this greeting is viewed as too abrupt.
If you are on a first name basis, use “Dear Steve”. Avoid using “Hello Steve” or “Hi Steve” in external emails unless you have a personal relationship with the recipient, as it coveys a level of familiarity and informality that many people consider unprofessional.
